Our business at Klaus Böcker GmbH is providing high-quality fruit products. For this we depend on natural resources, a good state of the environment and the knowledge and skills of people, who farm the land and process the fruit.
As a family-run company with a long tradition, we have always focused on long-term sustainable Dealing with our business partners, employees and the environment. Through our close cooperation with farmers In the regions where our production sites are located, we offer farmers secure sales their fruits contribute to reducing food waste in the supply chain and at the same time secure the supply of raw materials for our production.
The trust of our customers is very important to us. That’s why our business practices are based on transparency, Reliability and fairness.
We want to keep our production sites and supply chains Optimize it even further to offer our customers sustainably produced fruit juices, purees and concentrates and others To be able to offer fruit products.
In 2019, a sustainability department was founded in cooperation with the TU Hamburg-Harburg. The first projects have already been successfully implemented:
• Our banana puree production facility Antigua Processors/Guatemala is Sedex and Ecovadis registered
• Nkwaleni Processors in South Africa manufactures citrus juice concentrates, cells and oils. We achieved Platinum Status at the SIZA certification
As part of our business and our efforts to be more sustainable, we are already delivering a Positive contribution to achieving some UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which we want to expand further. In other categories we want Beyond that, we continue to improve. The figures below give an overview of our contributions and ambitions.
Our positive contribution to the SDG:
Our goals for the following SDG:
Fruit purees and juices are minimally processed and therefore contain many vitamins and minerals.
This makes them a good building block for a healthy and varied diet.
We offer farmers secure sales, even for those fruits that do not meet the quality requirements of the fresh fruit trade. In this way, we reduce the amount of food waste and increase the productivity of agricultural land without using additional fertilizers or land.
At our production sites, we offer people in rural areas an opportunity to earn an income. Thanks to our high standards, modern equipment and health care, we offer people good working conditions and ensure their qualifications through training and further education programs.
Our production is comparatively low-emission and does not generate any hazardous waste. Nevertheless, water, consumables and energy are used for operation, packaging and transportation and organic waste is generated. We are currently in the process of planning and installing a more modern waste water treatment plant at Antigua Processors. Furthermore, in the next few years we want to increasingly switch to renewable energies at all production sites and also reduce our waste by using more valuable materials from it.
In the coming years, we want to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by our production sites. To achieve this, we want to obtain more of our energy from renewable sources or generate it ourselves. Initial plans have been made.
Land use with fruit trees is generally gentler on the soil and biodiversity than agricultural land with annual crops such as maize or cereals. Nevertheless, fertilizers and pesticides are also used in fruit cultivation. Together with our suppliers, we are trying to keep their use to a minimum and gradually switch to organic or less harmful products. However, this is a lengthy process and is not entirely in our hands. Many of our fruit suppliers are already taking care of this and are, for example, Rainforest Alliance, Global G.A.P. – FSA, Sustainably Grown, SIZA or certified in accordance with the EU Organic Regulation.
Our production sites are located in rural areas. In South Africa, we work with farms that are managed by local farmers. Here, we want to intensify our cooperation through a planned training program and enable more people to gain further qualifications.
In Guatemala, we offer jobs and training positions for the local population and, in particular, offer many women the opportunity to earn their own income.
We are in constant contact with universities and industrial partners in order to develop new processes for even more efficient and careful use of the raw materials we use.
In 2019, we started evaluating key sustainability metrics at our banana puree and concentrate production site to collect and report on in Guatemala. We continue this commitment and extend it to ours as well Production site in South Africa.
In June 2022, the Guatemala site successfully passed the SMETA 4-pillar audit (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit). Our citrus fruit processing plant in South Africa has been certified according to the South African SIZA standard for several years (Sustainability Initiative of South Africa).
